RMU Showcase Recap

11/14/18 — DeKalb, IL | The DII and DIII Huskies participated in the Robert Morris University Showcase from November 9-11 in Bensenville, IL. The DII Huskies went 1-2-0 on the weekend and the DIII Huskies went 0-3 in the tournament.

Here’s a breakdown of each team’s games in the tournament:

DII Huskies

Friday, Nov. 9 vs. Lewis University
Friday’s game was a high-scoring contest as the Huskies dropped the game to the Flyers by a score of 7-5. Senior forward Keagan Cornier led the Huskies with three points (2 G, A) while junior forward Brad Krauser picked up two assists on the night. Senior defenseman David Madrigal and freshman forwards Justin Garr and Tyler Gut tallied the other NIU goals.
Freshman goaltender Chad Dodero made 46 saves on 53 shots in the game. Lewis outshot NIU by a 53-40 margin. The Huskies went 0-2 on the power play while the Flyers went 1-3 on the man advantage.

Saturday, Nov. 10 vs. Bradley University
The Huskies’ lone victory of the Showcase came during Saturday’s contest against the Bradley University Braves as the Huskies won by a score of 6-2. Senior forward Nick Treiber led the way for NIU as he tallied a hat trick in the contest and Madrigal also picked up three points (G, 2 A). Corner (2 A), Krauser (G, A) and freshman forward Brandon Ledyard (2 A) all recorded two points in the game. Sophomore defenseman Robert Apter scored NIU’s other goal in the contest.

Graduate goaltender Stephen Thulin made 39 saves on 41 shots on Saturday. Bradley outshot NIU by a 41-38 margin. The Huskies went 2-8 on the power play while the Braves went 1-3 on the man advantage.

Sunday, Nov. 11 vs. RMU Maroon
The DII Huskies closed the Showcase with a showdown against Robert Morris University Maroon. Despite Treiber (PP) and Gut netting tallies for the Huskies, NIU dropped the contest by a score of 3-2. Thulin made 39 saves on 42 shots in the contest. RMU outshot NIU by a 42-31 margin. The Huskies went 1-3 on the power play and killed off all five of the Eagles’ man advantages.
The DII Huskies now have a 5-9-0-0 record on the 2018-2019 campaign.
The next time the Huskies take the ice, they’ll be at home. NIU will host the Illinois State University Redbirds in two MACHA Conference games at 7:20 p.m. on November 16 and at 4:20 p.m. on November 17 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee, IL.

DIII Huskies

Friday, Nov. 9 vs. RMU White
The DIII Huskies began their Showcase weekend by taking on Robert Morris University White. The game belonged to the Eagles as they defeated NIU by a score of 13-0 on Friday. Sophomore goaltender Ethan Koncor made 21 saves on 28 shots in 28:45 of ice time while junior goaltender Mike Trybula made 17 saves on 21 shots in 31:15 of ice time. RMU outshot NIU by a 49-11 margin. The Huskies went 0-4 on the power play while the Eagles went 1-3 on the man advantage.

Saturday, Nov. 10 vs. Northwestern University
The Huskies were able to crack the scoreboard in Saturday’s contest, but still dropped the game 6-2 to the Northwestern University Wildcats. Junior defenseman Matthew Nge and freshman forward Elijah David tallied for NIU.

Trybula made 64 saves on 70 shots in the contest. Northwestern outshot NIU by a 70-12 margin. The Huskies didn’t take any penalties in the contest, but went 0-1 on their man advantage.
Sunday, Nov. 11 vs. Missouri State University

The DIII Huskies wrapped up their Showcase weekend with a game against the Missouri State University Ice Bears. Unfortunately for NIU, the Ice Bears won by a score of 13-1.
The DIII Huskies now have a 2-13-0-0 record on the 2018-2019 campaign.

The next time the Huskies take the ice, they’ll be participating in a home-and-home series with Aurora University. The Huskies and Spartans will face-off at 9:45 p.m. on November 16 at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva, IL, and at 7:00 p.m. on November 17 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee, IL.
