In Friday’s matchup it was NIU vs. RMC-Chicago which would set-up to be the “championship” on the first day of the tournament. The Huskies played very strong the first two periods of play, scoring three unanswered goals in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. The boys of RMC did capitalize on some mental breakdowns and penalties by the Huskies and would wind up winning the game 7-4. Junior Chris Bednarek finished the game with 2 goals and 1 assist. Senior goalie Tim Benham played in net for the Huskies, stopping 30 of 37 shots.
The second and third game of the weekend for the Huskies proved to be an offensive outburst. A little disappointed in their Friday loss, the Huskies took their frustration out on RMC-Peoria on Saturday night winning 9-3. Junior Ian Kalanges lead the way with 2 goals and an assist. Freshmen goalie Kenny Schatz stopped 35 of 38 shots. Then on Sunday the Huskies once again defeated RMC-Springfield for the third time this season by a score of 7-2. Freshmen Bobby DiStefano scored his first collegiate goal of his career. Sophmore Mike Sible had a goal and 2 assists in the game while once again Junior Chris Bednarek put in 2 more goals and finished the weekend with 5 points.
The Huskies now look to this offensive momentum into this coming weekend as they will play host to #15 Northern Michigan University on Friday night at 9pm, and then again Saturday afternoon at 3pm. All NIU students get in for free with their NIU OneCard.
