10/06/19 Dekalb, IL The D1 Huskies battled for the second straight weekend trying to win their first game and MCH Conference game of the season. NIU hosted #23 Midland University and ended up splitting the weekend, Midland taking Friday 7-1 and Huskies taking Saturday 3-1.
Midland started off the game Friday night going ahead three goals to none after the first period. Less than two minutes into the second period freshman forward Nick Gonzalez scored his second goal of the season making it 3-1. NIU and Midland were back and forth in the penalty box but Midland was able to pull ahead making the final score 7-1. Friday Sophomore Chad Dodero was in net with 28 saved on 35 shots.
Saturday the Huskies pulled through with a 3-1 win. Freshman Rodahn Evans scored the first goal of the game eighteen minutes into first. Rodahn stated “It felt really good getting the first goal on the board and it came from a beautiful pass from Gonzalez”. A minute and a half later Midland made it 1-1 to end the first period. Continuing into second, senior Brad Krauser scored the second goal for the Huskies making it 2-1. While the Huskies had multiple penalties over Friday and Saturday night, Midland walked away with more which helped the Huskies score the next goal. Freshman Austin Walny scored his first goal on a power play set up very nicely by freshman Osman Cholak. Final score of the game was 3-1. Coach Rucinski mentioned the amount of penalties had a lot to do with how the referees are calling the games. “Of course we would like to limit the amount of penalties and cut that number down as much as possible”. The Huskies skated away with their first win of the season with Brian Eisele in net making 45 saves on 46 shots.
The Huskies will be back on home ice October 11 as they play the University of Iowa D2. The game will begin at 7:50pm at Canlan Ice Sports West Dundee.
