Friday night was Senior Night, and saw the Huskies come out really strong, leading 2-0 after the first period with two power-play goals, by Nick Messing and Mike Strumberger. The second period however was one the Huskies would like to forget, as they allowed the Cougars to score four un-answered goals, two of which were short-handed goals. That was all the Cougars would need, as they stepped up their defense in the third to defeat the Huskies 4-2. Brandon Colello made his final start as a Huskies, allowing 4 goals on 32 shots.
After Friday night heartbreaker, the Huskies were very much capable of being able to beat the Cougars. That is exactly what the team did in the final game of the season. Mike Strumberger scored the first goal for the Huskies to tie them at 1-1 halfway through the 1st period. Ian Kalanges put the Huskies up 2-1 in the final minutes of the 2nd period but with seven minutes left in the 3rd period, the Cougars were able to score the tieing goal to make it 2-2 on a fluke bounce of the glass that buckled Huskie goaltender Tim Benham. The game went into overtime, but with only 20 seconds left in the sudden death period, Junior forward Chris Bednarek scored the game winning goal on a breakaway with a nice backhanded move. For the first time in five years the Huskies defeated SIU-E. Forward, Ian Kalanges said, “It felt really good to finally beat this team. As long as I have been playing for NIU, we have never beaten them and to send the seniors off on such a high note made the win that much better”. Senior goaltender, Tim Benham made his final start as a Huskie stopping 53 of 55 shots. . The Huskies finished the season 13-20-4.
