With the end of the semester winding down, the NIU Huskies took a small roadtrip this past weekend to play Eastern Illinois University. NIU had exepctations of winning both MACHA Gold Conference games, but the Huskies saw injuries and turnovers cost them the game on Friday evening, losing 7-4. Alex Alessi took the loss for the Huskies in net, and the team also saw senior forward, Chris Bednarek, leave the game with a shoulder injury. He will be re-evaluated this week.
On Saturday, the stands were packed with Eastern students who were loud and did make a home ice advantage. This was seen has the Panthers were able to run up a 4-0 lead going into the third period. But this is where things would change, as the Huskies pulled their largest comeback victory this season. NIU was able to pump in 8 goals on Eastern goaltender, Eric Grap, and win the game 8-5. Kenny Schatz got the victory in net for the Huskies, while Peter Alfano added 3 assists, and Adam Kelly got his first collegiate goal of his career. Billy Lyne had 2 goals and 2 assists and Adam Kelly had a goal and an assist, his first goal in a Huskie sweater.
The Huskies will play their final games of this semester at HOME this upcoming weekend (Dec.11th and 12th) vs. RMU-Springfield. Game Times are Friday at 9pm and Saturday at 3pm. This weekend will also mark Ian Kalanges’ last games as an NIU Hockey player, as he will be graduating this week with a degree in Organizational/Corporate Communications from NIU.
