4/24/2018 – DeKalb, IL | Forward Justin Garr has committed to Northern Illinois University for the fall of 2018 and to NIU Hockey for the 2018-2019 season.
Garr posted 58 points (27 G, 31 A) in 22 games for East Lake High School and 23 points (9 G, 14 A) in 27 games for the Gulf Coast Flames U18AA during the 2017-2018 season.
The Palm Harbor, FL native chose to commit to the university for its engineering program.
“I chose NIU because, not only can I play hockey, but I can get a great education, including my Master’s,” the 17-year-old said.
The 6’2”, 210 lbs. forward models his game after Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron and considers himself to be a playmaker.
Garr’s greatest accomplishment in hockey thus far includes being part of his previous teams’ winning cultures.
“While playing Midget/U-16, my travel team went on a 26-game winning streak, including five tournaments, which was pretty wild,” Garr said. “For high school, my freshman year, we went to Nationals.”
One of Garr’s hockey goals will come true this upcoming season and he’s happy to be with the Huskies for this new adventure.
“I really wanted to play hockey in college, so honestly as long as I am able to do this, [I’ll] be happy,” Garr said.
