DIII Huskies sweep Wheaton College

1/25/17 – DeKalb, IL | The DIII Huskies took on Wheaton College in a home-and-home series on January 20 and 21. NIU came out on top in both games to record the sweep of the weekend.

Friday’s game was played at Center Ice of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. NIU took the victory by a score of 11-2. The Huskies recorded goals from senior forward Ryan Long, junior forwards Danny Behles and Trevor

Bondarowicz, junior defenseman Keli Dorynek and sophomore defenseman Mike Neville.

Behles put up five points (4 G, A) in the contest while Bondarowicz posted a four point night (3 G, A). Neville tallied three points (2G, A) as well.

Junior goaltender Jake Tower played the first two periods of the contest and made 11 saves on 13 shots. Freshman goaltender Eric Odolski played the final 20 minutes and stopped all six shots that he faced.

The Huskies and Wheaton were at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee for Saturday’s contest. The Huskies jumped out to an early lead in the first period as junior forward Brian Kostecka tallied his third goal of the season just past the two minute mark of the opening frame.

The Huskies added to their lead halfway through the first period as freshman forward Matthew Nge netted his third goal of the season to make it 2-0 in the Huskies’ favor.

35 seconds after Nge’s tally, Wheaton got on the board with a shot that went five-hole on Odolski to cut the NIU lead in half.

NIU restored its two goal lead though as Nge followed up on his own rebound with 8:12 left in the first period for his second tally of the game and fourth of the season.

During the final two periods of the contest, Kostecka scored once more, Nge scored a third goal to complete his hat trick and Behles tacked on two markers. The Huskies took the victory by a score of 7-3.

Odolski made eight saves on nine shots during his 40 minutes of play on Saturday night. During the final 20 minutes of the game, freshman goaltender Mike Trybula made three saves on five shots on goal.

The DIII Huskies’ record for the 2016-17 season now stands at 9-16-0-0.

The Huskies will host the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 10 p.m. on January 27 and at 9:50 p.m. on January 28 at Leafs Ice Centre in NIU’s final home games of the season.
