11/21/17 – DeKalb, IL | The DIII Huskies hosted the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds on November 17 and 18 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee, IL. The Huskies’ offense lit the lamp early and often on the weekend as they picked up the sweep.
The Greyhounds scored first during Friday’s contest just before the four minute mark of the period, but the Huskies stormed back. Senior defenseman Vinny Barra netted his first goal in a Huskies sweater less than two minutes later to tie the game up at one.
26 seconds later, junior forward Tom Knetl tallied his eighth goal of the season to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Knetl then scored a power play goal four minutes later for his ninth marker on the 2017-2018 campaign. Senior forward Trevor Bondarowicz extended the NIU lead to 4-1 with his fifth goal of the season during a man advantage.
With just under six minutes remaining in the opening frame, the Greyhounds scored twice, including a power play tally, to cut the NIU lead to 4-3. Senior forward Cody Billeck put the Huskies up by a two-spot with his second goal of the season with 4:39 remaining in the frame.
With 42.2 seconds left in the first, the Greyhounds netted a power play goal to once again cut the NIU lead to one goal.
Senior forward and team captain Danny Behles scored his eighth and ninth goals of the season early in the second period to put NIU up 7-4. Senior forward Brian Kostecka then tallied a power play goal with 7:55 remaining in the middle frame; the marker was Kostecka’s sixth of the year.
Knetl and Behles completed their hat tricks during the remainder of the period; both of their goals were their tenth on the 2017-2018 campaign.
Sophomore goaltender Josh Stoos skated out as a forward during Friday’s game and scored his first goal in an NIU jersey to give the Huskies an 11-4 lead. Stoos’ goal came 32 seconds into the third period and was a power play marker.
The Greyhounds scored with just under six minutes remaining in regulation, but sophomore forward Nick Campbell tallied his second of the year with 24 seconds left to give the Huskies a 12-5 victory.
Sophomore goaltender Carl Lindgren started the game and made 23 saves on 27 shots in 40 minutes of play. Freshman goaltender Ethan Koncor made 11 saves on 12 shots in 20 minutes of play. Barra recorded six points (G, 5 A) on the night while Bondarowicz (G, 3 A) and Behles (3 G, A) both put up four points in the contest.
The Huskies were the team to get on the scoreboard first during Saturday afternoon’s contest. Junior defenseman Joe Schulz netted his first goal of the season near the halfway point of the first period. Kostecka then gave the Huskies a two-goal lead with his seventh goal of the year with 5:36 left in the first.
Lindgren skated out in the contest and scored his first goal in a Huskies sweater with 8.8 seconds remaining in the opening frame to give NIU a 3-0 lead going into the intermission.
The Greyhounds scored twice early in the second period to cut the NIU lead to 3-2, but Billeck put the Huskies back up by two goals with 8:49 left in the middle frame with his third goal of the year.
The Greyhounds scored 43 seconds later to cut the NIU lead to 4-3, but Lindgren responded with his second goal of the game to restore the NIU two-goal lead. Billeck then added his second of the night and fourth of the year with 4:15 remaining during the sandwich stanza.
Just before the three minute mark of the third period, the Greyhounds scored once again to cut the NIU lead to 6-4. But sophomore defenseman Eric Odolski tallied his second goal of the season three minutes later to give NIU a three-goal lead.
The Huskies scored four more times during the remainder of regulation. Kostecka netted his second of the night with 6:02 left for his eighth of the season; Billeck completed his hat trick with his fifth goal of the season with 5:48 remaining; sophomore forward Cory Packard netted his first goal of the season with 4:27 left; and Schulz tallied his second of the night with 1:22 remaining to give the Huskies an 11-4 victory over the Greyhounds.
Stoos started the game in net for NIU and made 25 saves on 27 shots in his 30:03 of ice time. Sophomore goaltender Mike Trybula then made 11 saves on 13 shots in his 29:57 of ice time. The Huskies outshot the Greyhounds by a 50-40 margin. Kostecka put up six points on the night (2 G, 4 A). The DIII Huskies now have a record of 5-12-0-0 on the 2017-2018 campaign.
“This weekend was a big weekend for us, not just because of the two wins, but we finally had a full team and saw the potential to which we can play,” Behles said. “I think there were a lot of positives from this weekend and we can take that momentum into our next games against RMU and go for another sweep.”
The Huskies have Thanksgiving weekend off, but when they return to action, they’ll be taking on Robert Morris University-White in two road games. At 8:50 p.m. on December 1 and at 7:50 p.m. on December 2, the Huskies will take on the Eagles at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, IL.
