11/24/16 – DeKalb, IL | The DIII Huskies hosted McKendree University on November 18 and 19 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee and the two teams split the weekend series.
During Friday’s contest, the Huskies got out to a 1-0 lead as sophomore forward Thomas Knetl scored his first goal of the season with a shot that went five-hole on the McKendree netminder.
McKendree tied the game up just before the five minute mark of the second period. The visitors then took a 2-1 lead less than two minutes later.
With 9:39 remaining in the sandwich stanza, freshman forward Matthew Nge scored his second goal of the season with a shot from the slot to tie the game up at two.
Junior forward Danny Behles netted his seventh goal of the season as he deflected in a shot with 5:48 left in the middle frame to give NIU a 3-2 lead.
McKendree battled back and tied the game up at three with 2:43 left in the second with a breakaway goal. The visitors then took a 4-3 lead with 22.7 seconds left in the period on a 2-on-1 rush.
The Huskies tied the game up at four within the first two minutes of the third period as freshman forward Colton Schaffter sent a backhanded shot past the McKendree netminder during a power play for his 14th goal on the 2016-17 campaign.
The game went into overtime and then a shootout with the score knotted at four.
Both teams failed to convert in the first round of the shootout but McKendree took a 1-0 lead in the second round. Schaffter knotted the shootout up in the third round as he went top shelf on the McKendree netminder.
In the fourth round, junior goaltender Jake Tower stopped the McKendree shooter and sophomore defenseman Mike Neville picked the blocker side corner with a backhanded shot to give the Huskies a 5-4 win over McKendree. Tower made 59 saves on 63 shots in the contest.
McKendree dominated Saturday’s contest against the Huskies. The visitors got out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. McKendree added two more goals in the second period and one more goal in the third period to take a
6-0 victory over NIU. Tower made 49 saves on 55 shots in the contest. NIU’s record is now 5-12-0-0.
The DIII Huskies will have Thanksgiving weekend off, but when they return to game action, they will be on home ice again. They will host the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 8:40 p.m. on December 2 and at 5:20 p.m. on December 3 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee.
