10/4/2018 — DeKalb, IL | The DIII Huskies traveled to East Alton, IL on September 28 and 29 to take on the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Cougars in two MACHA Conference games. The Huskies picked up their first win on the season on Friday, but split the weekend with SIUE as the Cougars recorded a “W” on Saturday.
Junior forward Bryce Meyers picked up six points on the weekend (2 G, 4 A) while senior forward Nick Marcuccilli (2 G, 2 A) and freshman forward Jarod Cheslock (3 G, A) both picked up four points for the Huskies.
On Friday, the Huskies got out to an early lead as Marcuccilli scored his first goal of the season 1:32 into the first period. The Cougars tied the game up at 6:58 of the period, but NIU fought back as freshman forward Justin Garr netted his first goal on the 2018-2019 campaign to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead at 14:35.
Garr and Marcuccilli added their second goals of the evening while Meyers also tallied in the second period to extend the NIU lead to 5-1. The Cougars scored late in the sandwich stanza to cut the NIU lead to three goals, but Meyers restored the Huskies’ four goal lead with his second of the night in the third period.
Cheslock netted a power play goal at 3:17 of the final frame and Garr completed his hat trick at 9:20. Freshman forward Elijah David tallied his first goal of the year to seal the Huskies 9-2 victory over the Cougars.
Junior goaltender Mike Trybula made 37 saves on 39 shots in the Huskies’ win. SIUE outshot NIU by a 39-31 margin. The Huskies went 2-3 on the power play and killed off all four of the Cougars’ man advantages.
Saturday’s game featured the Huskies opening up the scoring yet again. Senior forward Thomas Knetl netted his second goal of the season at the four minute mark of the opening frame to put NIU up 1-0. The Cougars tied the game up 23 seconds later, but freshman defenseman Ben Carney netted his first goal of the year 24 seconds later to restore the NIU lead.
The Cougars and Huskies traded goals yet again as the Cougars tied the game at two, but Cheslock gave NIU the lead back at 15:28 of the first period.
The Cougars answered back with a power play goal right before the halfway point of the second period and then took their first lead of the night at 14:20 of the middle frame.
Cheslock tied the game at four for NIU at 8:30 of the third period, but it wasn’t enough to force the game into overtime. With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, the Cougars scored the go-ahead goal and sealed their 5-4 victory over the Huskies.
Sophomore forward Ethan Koncor made 40 saves on 45 shots in the contest. The Huskies outshot the Cougars by a 52-45 margin. The Huskies went 0-8 on the power play while the Cougars went 1-6 on the man advantage.
The next time the DIII Huskies take the ice will be against Robert Morris University-White for two more MACHA Conference games. The Huskies and Eagles will face-off at 10:20 p.m. on October 11 and at 9:00 p.m. on October 12 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee, IL.
