1/24/19 — DeKalb, IL | The DIII Huskies hosted the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers on January 18 and 19 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee, IL. Unfortunately for the Huskies, the Panthers swept both games on the weekend.
The Panthers got on the board first on Friday night at the 14:48 mark of the first period with a power play goal. The Huskies tied the game up 24 seconds later with freshman forward Mike Jones’ first goal of the season.
The Panthers stormed back in the second period with six unanswered goals and hung on for the 7-1 victory over NIU. Sophomore goaltender Ethan Koncor made 88 saves on 95 shots in the contest. The Huskies didn’t convert on their lone power play of the game while the Panthers went 1-2 on their man advantages.
On Saturday night, the Panthers got out to a four-goal lead early in the first period. The Huskies closed their deficit to three goals with Jones’ second goal of the season at the 10:15 mark of the frame.
The Panthers tacked on three more goals to take a 7-1 lead over NIU by the 15:50 mark. Senior forward Ethan Goulde tallied his first goal of the season to bring the Huskies within five goals before the end of the first period.
The Panthers tallied seven more times throughout the remaining 40 minutes to defeat the Huskies by a score of 14-2. Junior goaltender Josh Stoos made 54 saves on 68 shots in the contest. The Huskies never had an opportunity on the power play while the Panthers scored on their lone man advantage. The DIII Huskies now have a record of 2-20-0-0.
The Huskies will play a MACHA Conference home-and-home series against Wheaton College the next time they take the ice. The Huskies and Wheaton play at 9:45 p.m. on January 25 at Carol Stream Ice Rink in Carol Stream, IL and at 4:20 p.m. on January 26 at Leafs Ice Centre.
