DIII Huskies Fall To Loyola

2/1/18 – DeKalb, IL | The DIII Huskies hosted the Loyola University Ramblers at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee on January 26 and 27, but NIU dropped both games.

The Ramblers defeated the Huskies by a score of 10-0 on Friday. Sophomore goaltender Carl Lindgren started the game and made 24 saves on 29 shots during 27:01 of play. Freshman goaltender Ethan Koncor made 13 saves on 13 shots in 12:59 of play. Sophomore goaltender Mike Trybula made 18 saves on 23 shots in 20 minutes of play. Loyola outshot NIU by a 65-19 margin. The Huskies went 0-for-1 on the power play, but killed of the Ramblers’ lone man advantage.

On Saturday, the Ramblers took a 2-0 lead early in the first period, but junior forward Thomas Knetl scored his 14th goal of the season to cut the deficit in half at 11:28. The Ramblers answered back with two more goals though to take a 4-1 lead going into the second period.

42 seconds into the middle frame, the Ramblers took a 5-1 lead. Senior forward Trevor Bondarowicz tallied his 10th goal of the season at 7:04 and senior defenseman Damon Lubkeman netted his first goal of the year at 10:13 to cut the Ramblers’ lead to two goals.

Late in the second and early in the third period, the Ramblers restored their four goal lead. At 8:27 of the final frame, sophomore forward Bryce Meyers tallied his seventh goal of the season to bring the Huskies within three, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the game.

The Ramblers tallied late in the third to secure an 8-4 victory over NIU to sweep the weekend. Koncor made 32 saves on 40 shots in the contest. The Huskies outshot Loyola by a 45-40 margin. The Huskies went 0-for-4 on the power play and killed off both of the Ramblers’ man advantages. The DIII Huskies now have a record of 8-19-0-0 on the 2017-2018 campaign.

The DIII Huskies will conclude the 2017-2018 regular season on home ice. The Huskies will host the Dordt College Blades at 7:20 p.m. on February 2 and at 3:30 p.m. on February 3 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee.
