DIII Huskies fall to Aurora University

12/13/16 – DeKalb, IL | The DIII Huskies finished the 2016 portion of their 2016-17 season with a home-and-home series against Aurora University on December 9 and 10 and the Spartans picked up two wins against NIU.

The Spartans got out to a three goal lead during the first period of Friday’s game at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva. The Huskies got on the board during the second period as junior forward Trevor Bondarowicz scored his fifth goal of the season at the 1:59 mark; sophomore forward Thomas Knetl and junior forward Danny Behles picked up the assists on the goal.

The Spartans added three more goals during the sandwich stanza to take a 6-1 lead going into the third period. They scored three more goals during the final frame to take a 9-1 win over the Huskies.

Junior goaltender Jake Tower made 46 saves on 55 shots on goal in the contest. AU outshot NIU by a 55-17 margin. The Huskies went 0-3 on the power play while the Spartans failed to convert on their lone man advantage.

The Spartans got out to a quick start on Saturday as they scored four goals in the first 9:28 of the first period at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee. Knetl scored to get the Huskies on the board at 15:03 of the opening frame; the marker was Knetl’s fourth goal of the season. Bondarowicz recorded the lone assist on the goal.

The Spartans scored twice in the first 1:33 of the second period to extend their lead to 6-1. Behles cut the NIU deficit to four goals at the 4:59 mark with his tenth goal of the season; Bondarowicz recorded the lone assist on the marker for his second helper of the game.

The Spartans scored eight more goals throughout the contest to take a 14-2 victory and record the sweep against the Huskies.

Tower made 41 saves on 55 shots on goal in the game. AU outshot NIU by a 55-13 margin. The Huskies went 0-6 on the power play while the Spartans scored on their lone man advantage.

The DIII Huskies’ record now stands at 5-16-0-0.

The next time the Huskies hit the ice, it will be for two MACHA Conference games in the New Year.

The Huskies and the Robert Morris University Black Eagles will face-off at 9 p.m. on January 6, 2017 and at 9:30 p.m. on January 7, 2017 at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.
