10/18/16 – DeKalb, IL | The DIII Huskies took on Dordt College in Iowa on October 14 and 15, but returned to DeKalb empty-handed as they dropped both road games.
Friday’s game saw the Huskies get on the board first as senior forward Ryan Long netted his fourth goal of the season during an NIU power play with 8:50 remaining in the first period.
Dordt tied the game up in the second period and took the lead as the home squad scored three times in the middle frame. Dordt added to its lead in the third period with two goals before the halfway mark of the stanza to make it 5-1 in the Blades’ favor.
Freshman forward Cory Packard tallied his first goal on the 2016-17 campaign late in the third period to cut NIU’s deficit to three goals, but Dordt scored once more before regulation was over to make the final score 6-2.
Freshman goaltender Carl Lindgren made 48 saves on 54 shots during Friday’ game. The Blades outshot the Huskies by a margin of 54-20 in the contest. The Huskies went 1-4 on the power play while the Blades failed to convert on their lone man advantage.
Saturday’s tilt was a one-sided affair as the Blades dominated the entire game. The home team defeated the Huskies by a score of 8-0.
Junior goaltender Jake Tower made 37 saves on 45 shots throughout the first two periods of the game. Freshman goaltender Mike Trybula stopped all 13 shots he faced during the remainder of the game after coming into relieve Tower near the end of the second period. Dordt outshot NIU by a margin of 62-19 in the contest.
The Huskies have been playing with a short bench for the past few weeks of the season, but it hasn’t hampered their efforts.
“It has been a rough few weeks with injuries,” senior defenseman Damon Lubkeman said. “When we have a full team, there’s no doubt in my mind we can skate with any team. What has happened from this weekend is a learning experience. Playing these elite teams with few players means we will be that much better and ready for conference play.”
The DIII Huskies will have a weekend off before returning to play two games on home ice. NIU will host Robert Morris University—White at 10 p.m. on October 28 and at 8:10 p.m. on October 29 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee.
