Freshman defenseman Robert Apter tied the game for the Huskies at 2:15 of the third period. The power play tally was Apter’s eighth goal of the season.
60 minutes wasn’t enough to decide the victor, so overtime and a shootout were needed. In the shootout, Apter and junior forward Tommy Rhyan scored to give the Huskies a 2-1 victory over the MACHA Conference rival Cougars. The win also kept the Huskies’ playoff hopes alive.
Durrbeck made 44 saves on 45 shots in the game. SIUE outshot NIU by a 45-33 margin. The Huskies went 1-for-5 on the power play and killed off all five of the Cougars’ man advantages. The DII Huskies now have a 10-22-1-0 record on the 2017-2018 campaign.
The Huskies will conclude the 2017-2018 regular season on the road with two games against the Saint Louis University Billikens in two MACHA Conference games. The Huskies will take on the Billikens at 5:30 p.m. on February 2 and at 2:50 p.m. on February 3 at Webster Groves Ice Arena in Webster Groves, MO.
