1/30/19 — DeKalb, IL | The DII Huskies traveled to the southwestern portion of Illinois for two MACHA Conference games against McKendree University on January 25 and 26. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they would return to DeKalb without any wins.
On Friday, McKendree scored four consecutive goals, including a power play marker, before the halfway mark of the first period to take a 4-0 lead over NIU.
Junior forward Brad Krauser tallied his 16th goal of the season with just under two minutes remaining in the opening frame to cut the NIU deficit to three goals.
The second period was a scoreless affair, but the Bearcats widened their lead in the third period. McKendree tallied seven unanswered goals in the final frame to defeat the Huskies by a score of 11-1.
Graduate goaltender Stephen Thulin made 56 saves on 64 shots in 50:54 of ice time and freshman goaltender Chad Dodero made 10 saves on 13 shots in 9:06 of ice time. McKendree outshot NIU by a 77-22 margin. The Huskies weren’t able to convert on any of their six power plays and killed off nine of the Bearcats’ ten man advantages.
The Huskies opened up the scoring on Saturday afternoon with a power play goal courtesy of sophomore defenseman Robert Apter’s third goal of the season at 9:43 of the first period. The NIU lead didn’t last long though as the Bearcats tallied twice within the next six minutes to take a 2-1 lead.
Freshman forward Justin Garr tallied his eighth goal on the 2018-2019 campaign during the last minute of the opening frame during a power play to tie the game going into the second period.
The Bearcats scored nine unanswered goals—four in the middle frame and five in the third period—to defeat the Huskies by a score of 11-2 for the sweep of the weekend.
Thulin made 50 saves on 56 shots in 40 minutes of play in the contest while Dodero made 15 saves on 20 shots in 20 minutes of play. McKendree outshot NIU by a 76-20 margin. The Huskies went 2-4 on the power play while the Bearcats went 2-5 on their man advantages. The DII Huskies now have a record of 10-17-0-0 on the 2018-2019 campaign.
The Huskies will be on home ice for the last time this season as they host Saint Louis University in two MACHA Conference games. At 7:20 p.m. on February 1 and at 4:20 p.m. on February 2 the two teams will face-off at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee, IL.
