1/19/17 – DeKalb, IL | The DII Huskies and the DIII Huskies were both on the road for their sets of games this past weekend. The DII Huskies took on McKendree University on January 14 and 15 and dropped both contests to the Bearcats. The DIII Huskies faced-off against Western Illinois University on January 13 and 14 and won both games.
The DII Huskies scored the first goal of the weekend against McKendree on January 14 as senior forward Tyler Hilton netted his 12th goal of the season early in Saturday’s game. But the lead didn’t last long as the Bearcats tied the game up at one at the 4:02 mark of the opening frame.
McKendree went on to score six more times in the first period to take a 7-1 lead going into the first intermission. The home team scored twice more in the second period and then once early in the third period to take a 10-1 lead over the Huskies.
Forward Brandon Niedziela scored his second goal of the season during a power play in the third period to cut the NIU deficit to eight, but McKendree tacked on two more goals during the remainder of the contest to take a 12-2 victory over NIU.
Sunday’s contest started out with seven straight goals from the Bearcats throughout the first two periods. Senior defenseman Bryan Peterson scored his second goal of the season at the 11:54 mark of the final frame to put NIU on the board, but the Huskies wouldn’t get any closer. McKendree took the game by a score of 7-1 and swept the weekend.
The DII Huskies now have a record of 8-20-0-0-0. For their next two games, the Huskies will take on Saint Louis University at 7:30 p.m. on January 20 and at 5:30 p.m. on January 21 at Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee. Friday’s contest is AHAI Youth Hockey Night. All AHAI players that wear their team jerseys will get free admission into the game.
Meanwhile, the DIII Huskies took on Western Illinois University on January 13 and 14. NIU defeated WIU by a score of 5-4 during Friday’s contest. NIU completed the sweep of the weekend during Saturday’s contest as the Huskies took a 10-4 victory over the home squad.
The DIII Huskies’ record is now 7-16-0-0. NIU will face-off against Wheaton College in two MACHA Conference games in a home-and-home series this weekend. At 8:40 p.m. on January 20, the DIII Huskies will be on the road as they travel to Center Ice of DuPage in Glen Ellyn to take on Wheaton. At 8:10 p.m. on January 21, the two teams will head to Leafs Ice Centre to finish the weekend match-up.
