11/8/17 – DeKalb, IL | The DII Huskies traveled down to the Sunshine State for two games on November 3 and 4 against the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they would return to DeKalb without a victory on the trip.
The Eagles got on the board early and often during Friday’s contest. The first goal was scored 52 seconds into the game to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The Eagles then scored less than three minutes later with a shot
through traffic to extend their lead to two goals. FGCU would tack on another marker off of a deflection before the opening frame was up to take a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission.
The Eagles would score three times in the second period and then twice more in the third period to defeat the Huskies by a score of 8-0.
Senior goaltender JoJo Durrbeck made 66 saves on 74 shots in the contest. FGCU outshot NIU by a 74-16 margin. The Huskies killed off all three of the Eagles’ power plays, but also went 0-for-2 on the man advantage.
The Eagles jumped out to a lead during the first period of Saturday’s game as well. The home team took a 1-0 lead just before the halfway mark of the opening frame.
But the Huskies fought back in the first. Junior forward Nick Treiber tied the game up at one with a shot from below the right circle at 12:18 of the period. Treiber’s seventh goal of the year went top shelf on the Eagles’ goaltender.
26 seconds later, senior defenseman Thomas Turner made it 2-1 in NIU’s favor as he found himself on a breakaway and put the puck home with a shot that went high blocker side for his second tally of the season.
The Eagles battled and tied the game up at two courtesy of a power play goal with 2:53 left in the first period. The Eagles then stepped on the gas and took a 3-2 lead with 15.7 seconds remaining in the period with a back door, tap-in goal.
The Eagles tacked on three more markers in the second period and four more in the third period to take a 10-2 victory over the Huskies for the sweep of the weekend series.
Senior goaltender Nick Bove made 51 saves on 61 shots in the contest. FGCU outshot NIU by a 61-19 margin. The Eagles’ power play came up huge for them in the game as it went 2-for-3 on the night while the Huskies failed to convert on their lone man advantage.
The DII Huskies now have a record of 4-12-0-0 on the 2017-18 campaign.
