11/17/19 — DeKalb, IL – The D3 Huskies took on Bradley University on home ice November 15th and 16th. The Huskies swept the weekend with 3-2 wins both nights.
NIU came to home ice ready to win. Freshman Davidson McLean netted the Huskies first goal near the end of the second period. McLean’s goal tied the game 1-1 after Bradley scored in the first period. Coming back for second period the Huskies were fired up and ready to win. Sophomore Justin Garr scored a goal at 8:12 in third and then Brett Buttice scored the Huskies winning goal at 13:13 of the third as well. NIU was able to defend to keep the puck away from the net and skated away with the first 3-2 win.
Saturday, the Huskies put up a fight. Skating into second period the score was 0-2 but 17 seconds in Zack Sockol got the Huskies on the board to make it 1-2. Nineteen minutes later Mason McCoy tied it up at 2-2. Heading into the third period Bradley and NIU accumulated many shots on goal. Matthew Nge was able to score the Huskies third goal at 17:37 for the Huskies second weekend win of 3-2. Nge shot the puck through many players and saved the Huskies from a possible overtime.
Junior goaltender Ethan Koncor was in goal both nights. Friday, saving 26 of 28 shots and Saturday, saved 21 of 23 shots. Koncor mentioned the team played well defensively. “They kept the puck in the offensive zone and if it came to the goal they kept the puck wide. If shots were in front of me I made the saves needed to keep the team in it.”
The Huskies will be on home ice November 22 and 23 taking on Illinois State University. Games will begin Friday at 7:20pm and Saturday at 4:20pm at Canlan Ice Center West Dundee.
