11/24/19 Dekalb, IL – The D3 Huskies were on home ice playing against Illinois State University. The Huskies swept the Redbirds over the weekend with scores of 4-1 Friday and 3-0 Saturday.
The Huskies battled back and forth Friday. It was not until the second period when goals were on the board. ISU found the back of the net first and the Huskies tied it up three minutes later when Davidson McLean scored. After NIU tied the game they were able to find the momentum to score more. Brett Buttice scored with a few minutes left in second and made the game 2-1 Huskies. Coming back for third period Matthew Nge made it a 3-1. Nge mentioned that they came out this weekend to show what they could do against ISU as they did not play well the last time. “We played the best weekend of hockey so far and some of the penalty calls were rough but we kept the momentum.” The Huskies last goal of the night was an empty net goal made by McLean assisted by Buttice. Ethan Koncor was in net for the 4-1 win stopping 30 of 31 shots.
Saturday night, Coach Weems said the momentum picked up where it left off on Friday and they were able to shutout the Redbirds. Sophomore Justin Garr found the back of the net in first period. The Huskies skated into second period 1-0. McLean was able to score a goal with less than a minute left in the second period allowing the Huskies to go into the third up 2-0. NIU continued their scoring when Sophomore Aaron Harris scored the Huskies third goal with 21 seconds left in the game. Senior Josh Stoos was in net saving all 29 shots.
The Huskies will be on the road for the last games of 2019 as they travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take on Milwaukee School of Engineering. Friday, December 6th at 7:00pm and Saturday, December 7th at 4:00pm at the Kern Center.
