1/21/2013 – Dekalb, IL – In what could only be a called a fun weekend of games at the Fox Valley Ice Arena, the D3 Huskies swept the Augustana Vikings with an amazing amount of offensive skill from both teams. A great send off for a team play their final home games of the season in front of a raucous crowd.

Friday Night’s affair began quite ominous as the Huskies trailed the Vikings 3-2 with goals coming from Nick Renville and Colin Phelan on the power play.  Then all offensive hell broke loose in the second period. Nick Frodyma scored early on at 2:58 making the score the even at three. Augustana came back with a vengeance with three goals in four minutes. NIU now trailing 6-3 would not choose to not lie over a die but to take over the game. The first strike was from Phelan again at 12:37 with an assist to Brett Freitag. Then Jon Pounds and JC Weems took over the show as the two combined on three goals in about five minutes and once again the game was tied to end the period, this time at 7-7. The Huskies came out firing to start the third and put the game out of reach with goals from Freitag, Renville and a shorthanded goal for a hat trick by Colin Phelan. Augie would notch one more goal at 7:30, however, that was quickly erased by Jon Pounds with help from who else,  JC Weems at 8:53. The final score of this offensive display was 11-9 featuring a hat trick from Colin Phelan and two goals each from JC Weems, Jon Pounds and Nick Renville.

After Friday night’s game, no one knew what to expect. Hoping to capitalize on the momentum of the game the Huskies looked to control the pace early. That was however not what happened as the Vikings led 3-0 after fifteen minutes of play.  JC Weems got NIU on the board at 17:17. But Augustana was able to strike back less than one minute later taking a 4-1 lead to the locker room during the first intermission. In the quietest period of the weekend the Huskies chiseled away at the lead. JC Weems scored at 8:41 with an assist from Colin Phelan and Jimmy Kozeny at 19:28 from Weems and Steve Sullivan making it 4-3 going into the third period. Then the Huskies stepped on the gas and never looked back. Jon Pounds opened the scoring at 6:37 tying the game at four aside. New team member Matt Tiberi put the Huskies up for good at 12:10 with help from Renville and Alex Tiberi. Jon Pounds scored at 14:03, Brett Frietag at 18:24 and JC Weems iced it with 15 seconds left in regulation for an 8-4 Huskies sweep.

Next up for the D3 Huskies will be Robert Morris University this Wednesday Night (1/23) and Saturday Night (1/26) at the The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.
