2/2/2020 Dekalb, IL – The D3 Huskies battled hard over the weekend for the last games of the season. NIU split the games with Wheaton College, Friday 4-1 and Saturday 4-6 at Canlan Ice Sports West Dundee.
Friday night, NIU came out strong and had the hustle needed to win. A minute in Zach Sockol found the back of the net to lead the Huskies 1-0 through the first period. Coming back for the second period with more determination, three minutes in, Mason McCoy netted a goal. With NIU up 2-0 Cody Radman made a goal with assists from Justin Garr and Sockol. Minutes after reaching 3-0 McCoy netted his second goal of the game and the Huskies led 4-0. In the final minutes of the game, Wheaton scored a goal leaving the final 4-1.
Goaltender Matthew Coppolillo saved 25 of 26 shots.
Saturday was the last home game of the season and was dedicated to Senior Night. The Huskies skated out confident but could not pull through. Wheaton found the back of the net first and then Justin Garr tied the game. Less than two minutes later, Aaron Harris pulled the Huskies ahead. Wheaton scored leaving it 2-2 to end the first period. Coming back for the second period, Wheaton started it off and the Huskies answered back seconds later. Mason McCoy scored his third goal of the weekend and tied it up for the Huskies again. A minute later, Kyle Meehan found the back of the net on the one and only powerplay and got the Huskies up 4-3. Wheaton scored their last goal on an empty net. Unfortunately, the Huskies lost strength due to penalties and dropped the game 4-6.
Goaltender Senior Josh Stoos saved 37 shots of 42.
The Huskies will be traveling to Springfield, Illinois for playoffs hosted by Bradley University. The Huskies hold the Bronze #2 spot and will play Friday February, 14 at 2:15pm.
