9/25/2021 The DIII Huskies were on the road for the first time in the 2021-2022 season. The team had a hard weekend of games, falling to Northwestern University. Friday, the Huskies lost 8-9 and Saturday fell in overtime, 4-5.
Friday, the Huskies came out fighting to win. Justin Garr and Ethan Krieger started off the game scoring within seconds of each other, to pull the Huskies ahead 2-0 before Northwestern scored their only goal of the first period. Following Northwestern’s goal, Noah Carlock and David Kraaz scored to end the first period 4-1. Skating into the second period, Northwestern was able to tie 4-4 before Huskies Kraaz scored his second goal of the night and made the score 5-4. Minutes later, Northwestern scored another goal and NIU followed back when Jason Kliment tied again to end the second period 6-5. Northwestern started off the third period making the score 6-7 before Kliment scored again 10 minutes in. With less than three minutes left in the third period, the score was 7-9 Max Ruttenburg scored the Huskies’ final goal of the game to have a final score of 8-9.
Saturday, the Huskies kept their eye on the puck. Mason McCoy was the first in the game to score a goal. Minutes later, Northwestern answered back to tie the game. The Huskies continued to fight for a goal when Justin Garr tied to end the first period. David Kraaz scored his 3rd goal of the weekend to pull the Huskies ahead ending the second period 3-2. Northwestern came back to score in the third period taking the lead early until Noah Carlock answered back and tied again taking them into overtime. Seconds into overtime, Northwestern found the back of the net and the Huskies fell 4-5.
Goaltender Matthew Capek played Friday saving 47 of 56 shots. Goaltender Matthew Coppoillio saved 44 of 49 shots on goal Saturday.
The DIII Huskies return to home ice this upcoming weekend October 1st and 2nd to play against Illinois State University. Friday’s game time is at 7:30 pm and Saturday’s is 4:20 pm at Canlan Ice Sports West Dundee.
