9/19/2021 The DI Huskies started off the 2021-2022 season after a year off due to the pandemic. While NIU Hockey has had some restructuring, the team has worked hard. On September 17th and 18th they took on John Carroll University in Ohio. Unfortunately, John Carroll took both wins for the weekend with Friday’s game score of 2-6 and Saturday 3-4.
Friday the Huskies worked hard to find the back of the net but it did not happen until the third period. Austin Walny scored a power-play goal less than a minute into the third period. This brought the score to 1-4. Minutes later Hunter Wahl with the help of Rodahn Evans and Midas Bacidore found the back of the net. The Huskies ended the game shortly after with a score of 2-6.
Saturday the Huskies came back to fight however John Carroll started off the game. The score was 0-4 when Brandon Weitzel scored his first goal as a Huskie to end the second period 1-4. Heading into the third period the Huskies continued hitting the back of the net. Evans scored a goal less than 3 minutes into the third period and minutes later, Bacidore scored his first goal as a Huskie. The final score for Saturday’s game was 3-4.
Brandon Weitzel commented “ I thought the game went well for the first weekend of the season. It was nice to get the first goal out of the way, it’s less stressful and is always important.”
Midas Bacidore stated “ It was relieving to get the first ones under the belt. I really liked the way our offense was running by the end of the weekend. I think we’ll have a very good year offensively.”
Goaltender Brian Eisele was in net Friday night saving 43 of 49 shots for the Huskies and goaltender Ben Vutci was in net Saturday saving 27 of 31 shots.
The D1 Huskies are on home ice this upcoming Friday and away Saturday playing Purdue-Northwestern University. Friday’s game is at 7:20 pm at Canlan Ice Sports West Dundee and Saturday’s game is 5:30 pm at Ice Kube Sports Complex in Indiana.
